I’m sure you’ve seen them. The metal obsessed teenager that sits at the back of the class. The nerdy, classical music fan. Mention the special word that makes them go into a frenzy, whether it be rap music, dubstep, techno, pop, whatever. They drone on and on and on about how music made with a computer is bad or how rap is just talking really fast. It seems well, rather weird why a person would insist something is music and something isn’t but they do, they do. Well, I’m going to contribute a lovely rant to you fellow music lovers. From rap to techno, everybody has invalid opinions.
Firstly, saying rap isn’t music is a lie. The definition of rap is defined as ‘a type of popular music of US black origin in which words are recited rapidly and rhythmically over an instrumental backing.’ Okay, so rap music uses instruments and uses vocals. Kinda like metal. The problem with not liking rap is that there is usually more than one reason. the most prominent reason, is perhaps the fact that they, uh, talk about bitches (and other sexual things) and their money with might freak out some
nice guys people. honestly, I’m going to have to say, yes, for Lil wayne and other mainstream artists, yes, but let’s be real, when was the last time a Lil wayne song charted. Another really popular artist is Kendrick Lamar who talks about social issues. Example? The hook to Swimming Pools (Drank) a song about what drives people to drink.
Nigga, why you babysitting only two or three shots?
I’mma show you how to turn it up a notch
First you get a swimming pool full of liquor, then you dive in it
Pool full of liquor, then you dive in it
I wave a few bottles, then I watch ’em all flock
All the girls wanna play Baywatch
I got a swimming pool full of liquor and they dive in it
Pool full of liquor, I’mma dive in it
While it doesn’t seem that eloquent, it isn’t talking about how he wants to engage in sexual intercourse or how much money he has. Music like what Kendrick makes is the reason why many people branch out to rap.
And then there is the race issue.
As you know, there are many, many racist people in America. Some deny that they are racist and others don’t even know that they are racist. ANd I know that what I’m going to say might seem racist but please, listen (or read). As you know, rap comes from a predominantly black history and most of the well-known rappers are black. What do racists hate? Black people. And let’s be honest, what Eminem did was not revolutionary besides the fact that he was a white rapper that rapped about killing people. Yeah. But it seems like he gets a free pass among people who hate rap. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
There are many reasons why people hate rap but it usually involves generalizations and pinions that aren’t backed up by evidence. Wait,is that a generalization?
And now, techno (is not music!11!)
I’m sure you’ve been to a concert to with a music snob and when the lights dim and the everybody leaves, they whisper into your ear, “This is real music not like electronic music.” Hopefully I’m not alone. Techno has a long history of hatred among fans of classical music simply because it is made on a computer. this is one of the few times I have to research the definition for music, which, by the way is ‘vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.’ So poetic and eloquent. According to Wikipedia ‘Electronic music is music that employs electronic musical instruments and electronic music technology in its production, an electronic musician being a musician who composes and/or performs such music’.
So now we have that out of the way, why do people hate electronic music?
Firstly, it is electronic music not techno, which is EDM. This is a common mistake. The prime reason why people hate electronic music is because it’s not using actual instruments and it’s easy to make. Both are false. A lot of rave artists don’t use actual instruments but may use a keyboard in production. Many composers don’t exclusively use music as well but instead compose music. Electronic music is like that except they make the music as well. And back to the point about how electronic music doesn’t use actual instruments, many electronic music artists use synthesizers (as well as rock bands). Deadmau5 has an impressive collection.
Wow, a 13-year-old can totally use this. So easy.
Electronic music is basically composing and then creating that music electronically. Synthpop bands have used electronic equipment for ages and so have rock bands. Saying that electronic music is easy is not true and saying electronic music isn’t music because they use electronic items is deplorable.
Often you see a person grumbling about how horrible pop music is.
Sweetie, the pop charts have always been terrible. In 1973, when Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon was released, only one song made it to Billboard’s end of year charts: Money. The #1 spot was given to Tony Orlando and Dawn, ‘Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree’ Which you will most definitely not have a single idea what this song is.
Pop music is just music that is popular. Just because your favourite metal band didn’t chart doesn’t mean you have to worry. And anyway, nobody is making those people listen to the charts anyway.
In conclusion, most people who hate a certain music genre hate it because they haven’t explored the genre and are making generalizations based on the charts and preconceived notions. Yes, dubstep is music, yes, gangsta rap is music. Can we please stop saying they aren’t?
